Adjutant and First Lieutenant Thompson Dunn (1839 – 1864)
In 1862, Dunn enrolled in the Army and was part of the 79th Regiment, Company C. His regiment, under the command of Colonel Knefler (also buried in Crown Hill Cemetery), established a picket line and charged upon the Confederate Army in Georgia.
Captain Eli Ritter (also buried in Crown Hill Cemetery) later wrote in his report, “The officers and men behaved gallantly in the charge, but, as they were unable to carry the works, they fell back a short distance to the cover of timber, where the regiment was reformed, and during the night, as ordered by the brigade commander, threw up a line of works. In the action, Adjutant Thompson Dunn was killed.” Dunn was returned to Indianapolis and buried in Crown Hill in 1865.
