Family Mausoleums

Crown Hill has 88 family mausoleums or crypts that range in date from 1864-2023. We inventory, catalog damage, and rank the preservation needs of all 88 structures. Over the last three years, we have restored eight mausoleums, with more planned for this year and years to come.

Two restorations completed in 2023 were the Severin and Fisher Mausoleums.

Severin Mausoleum

The name Severin is a familiar one in Indianapolis as Henry Severin built his hotel (now known as the Omni Severin) in downtown Indianapolis across the street from Union Station. In 1913, the architectural firm Vonnegut and Bohn (who also designed the cemetery’s Sentry House) designed the hotel. Restored in 2023, the Severin Mausoleum was designed in 1896. The first entombment was in 1897; the last of 10 burials was in 1945. Read more here.

Fisher Mausoleum

Hoosier Carl Fisher was a successful entrepreneur. He expanded his business and became involved in bicycle racing and later, automobile racing. Fisher operated in Indianapolis what is believed to be the first automobile dealership in the United States, and worked at developing an automobile racetrack locally.

The Fisher family built the Fisher Family Mausoleum in Crown Hill Cemetery in 1916. The Egyptian-style structure holds seven individuals. In 2023, the mausoleum received exterior cleaning and caulking of the interior joints by Head Construction. Read more here.
