Sarah Bolton

(1814-1893)

“The first singer in a New Land,” Sarah started writing poetry as a youth while living near Madison, Indiana.

She and her husband moved to a farm on the west side of Indianapolis in 1831, and she became Indiana’s unofficial poet laureate, writing poems for special occasions in addition to more personal poems. Her most famous poem, “Paddle Your Own Canoe,” was known around the world, and she’s honored with a plaque in the Indiana state capitol building. Several other poems are about people now buried at Crown Hill, including one entitled “Two Graves,” about the burial place of her husband and daughter, whom she now rests beside.
