Visual Artist: Sophie Hawk (1902-1956)

Sophie Hawk is not your typical visual artist. She did not work in oils or watercolors, but rather textiles and metal. She was a dressmaker and jewelry designer. Born in Romania in 1902, she began working at an early age and by the age of eight, she had an apprenticeship with a local tailor. Her dedication to the craft was evident and her skills grew so refined that her apprenticeship master paid her father to retain her services.

Forced into an unhappy, arranged marriage at the age of 21, Sophie made the bold decision to get a divorce and immigrate to the United States with her young daughter Silvia.

Settling first in New York and then later Chicago, she started her own tailoring business in the United States. With an exceptional eye for detail and an intimate knowledge of fine fabrics, Sophie quickly gained a reputation as “The Parisian Dressmaker.” She designed exclusive clothing for a select clientele, achieving great success.

In 1936, Sophie relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she worked as a tailor at Blocks and the Indiana Fur Company. After her retirement, Sophie turned her attention to redesigning old jewelry. She purchased odd bits and pieces, transforming them into entirely new creations that she sold with great success. Inspired by this new venture, she purchased a car and learned to drive, so she could sell her jewelry at various locations and events. We are still looking for a photograph of one of her creations!
