The Godfather of Indianapolis jazz
Errol Grandy was remembered as “the godfather of Indianapolis jazz.” A small piano is engraved on the headstone he shares with his parents.
On piano, he often accompanied touring stars such as Dinah Washington and Billie Holliday when they were in town, but it was through his mentoring of local artists like Wes Montgomery, J.J. Johnson and Freddie Hubbard that he had a more lasting influence. (1918-1991, Section 98 Lot 986, GPS 39.8136527, -86.1716931)
