Sula “Ma Dew” Spann Dewey

(7 Jan 1872 – 9 Jan 1962)

After separating from her husband, Dewey moved to Indiana with her son. She was a governess at the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphans’ Home in Knightstown, IN. She had a career as a superintendent of orphanages in Illinois, Minnesota and California.

In 1931, she became the LA Orphans Home Superintendent. In 1935, a young Norma Jeane Mortenson came to live at the orphanage. Norma Jeane grew up to be Marilyn Monroe.

Sula Dewey was the governess at the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphans’ Home in Knightstown, IN.
Sula Dewey is buried in Section 223, Lot 289.
