Mari Evans

(1923-2017) Section 211, Lot 1043

Evans moved to Indianapolis in 1947 after trying to pursue a career in music in New York. Here, she worked civil service jobs until finding her voice as a prominent poet of the Black Arts Movement of the ’60s and ’70s.

Just prior to her death, Indianapolis honored her contributions with a mural on the side of a Massachusetts Avenue building downtown.
