George “Little George” Amick (1924 – 1959)

The 1958 Indianapolis 500 got off to a terrible start when 15 cars collided on the first lap. But “Little George” Amick survived the start and actually led for 18 laps before finishing second, 28 seconds behind winner Jimmie Bryan. He was named Rookie of the Year, beating out another rookie you may have heard of — A.J. Foyt, who had spun out on lap 148. In an Indy car, Amick won three races in 43 starts.
