Carter Temple, Jr. (13 Nov 1843 – 14 Feb 1929). Born enslaved in Kentucky, Temple served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a USCT (he went by Carr Hopkins while serving). He made his way to Indianapolis, and in May 1876, he became one of the first four African Americans to join the Indianapolis Police Department. He is buried in Section 37, Lot 1493.
