A Talk – Mount Auburn: Cemetery, Arboretum, and Cultural Landscape

Join us on March 30 at Indiana Landmarks Center for a talk about the origins of the nation’s first public parks – “rural cemeteries.” David Barnett, the former President of Mount Auburn Cemetery and the American Public Gardens Association, will speak to the first large-scale designed green spaces open to the public in North America.

Designed to inspire the living as well as bury and commemorate the dead, “rural” cemeteries like Mount Auburn (1831) in Boston and Crown Hill (1863) in Indianapolis, are cultural landmarks and important urban green spaces serving their communities as parks and outdoor museums today.
