Junius “Rainey” Bibbs
(1910-1980) Section 94, Lot 420
While studying to become a teacher at Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, Bibbs frequently interrupted his studies to play professional baseball on six different Negro League Teams from 1933-1944.
He played with Satchel Paige on the Kansas City Monarchs when they won three back-to-back North American League pennants. When he did attend college, he was a star fullback on a mostly white team that too often wouldn’t properly block for him, leaving him sometimes bruised and bloody before the games were over. In 1945, he started a job teaching and coaching at Crispus Attucks High School, remaining there until he retired over 25 years later.
